Yellow Tail Merlot

This may be the epitome of good cheap wine. At least in my humble opinion. The bottle that I picked up came from Long’s Drug Store in Sunnyvale, CA for a whopping $6.99 (you can probably find it cheaper in some grocery stores, too). The 2005 Yellow Tail Merlot is a recent release from the Casella Family Vineyards in South Eastern Australia. While many wine snobs will turn their nose at this mass marketed wine, this is a wine built for the new wine drinker, average Joe, and non wine snob.

A little information about the wine.

  • There are 120 calories in a 6 oz. glass
  • The family that started the winery is of Italian origins
  • The name comes from a wallaby

According to the label, this wine is a great “slurper.” Well, for the price, who can argue. But, if you actually like tasting and enjoying your wines, then this has a few simple characteristics. When you breathe in the aromas, there are hints of plums and vanilla. When you sip it, it comes off as being a thick fruity wine. Not fruity as in grape juice, but sweeter than most merlots that you will find. Personally, I try to keep a bottle of Yellow Tail on hand at all times. It is a staple and many of your friends will be able to enjoy a wine that they have seen before.
