D. Virginie Carigñan Vin De Pays De l’Aude
This is a wine that I picked up from Whole Foods Market last week. Yes, it was on the cheap isle for their wine section, but I was intrigued by it only being $8.99 and from France. I am not a French sympathizer or anything, but they have been making some killer wines for the last few centuries.
So, a little bit about the name.
- D. Virginie, short for Les Domaines Virginie is a relatively new winery in the south of France.
- Carigñan is a type of grape that is widely present in the south of France but has origins from the Cataluñyan town of Cariñena, of Spain.
- Vin de Pays translated into English literally means “Wine of the Table” or table wine.
- de l’Aude means that the location in the south of France as being the Aude River.
Now that you know where it comes from and have learned the name of a new grape, let me tell you about this wine. So-so is about all I can give it. Good if you just want some wine that is a bit tart but nothing that you would serve at a party. I guess I can call this a “mac and cheese” grade wine. In fact, that is what I ate with it. The tart helped cut through the creaminess of the Velveeta. When all is said and done, skip this one and go to the next. In fact, if you visit the winery’s website you will notice that this wine isn’t even part of the line up. Probably a failed experiment.

I’m glad you’re an adventure seeker. I don’t currently know much about affordable French wines, and can’t wait to try your first pick.
