Storrs 2003 White Riesling

For Valentine’s Day, our featured wine is a wonderful White Riesling from Storrs Winery.

White Riesling Monterey, 2003
Viento Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains, CA
Storrs Winery
Price: About $14

We tried this wine with a not so traditional Valentine’s meal of Thai Fried Rice. As anticipated, it proved to be great with the spicy nauture of this dish, as would likely be the case with Mexican, Cajun or any other spicy dish. The nose was filled with floral scents that brought to mind passion flower, or perhaps that’s only because we opened it on Valentine’s Day. To the delight of my palate, vanilla and a hint of English breakfast tea. If you’re unfamiliar with Riesling, it’s on the sweet side, but still offers a bit of the complexity associated with quality. In what I believe is breaking the norm, we also paired it up with a dark chocolate tart dessert from Zanott’s Di Tavola Bakery. You may want to check with our friends at Wine Outlook, but I believe that chocolate is typically seen as a great match for a good red such as Cabernet Savignon, Pinot Noir or Merlot. Despite that, paired with this Riesling–yum! To top off the evening pairings, we found that this wine also goes quite well with whirlpool tub jets and bubble bath, the jets and bubble bath not necessarily the best combination (try it and you’ll see what I mean).

My VinoForLess partner Christian has great fun with the trivia and historical aspects of wine. I wonder if he’ll comment on this post. I’m more interested in a future visit to Storrs Winery.
